Where Can I Find Free Online Social Work Courses?

MIT and the University of Notre Dame, as well as other accredited postsecondary schools, offer free online social work courses. Topics you can study in these courses include social psychology, social relationships and the nature of community. Learn about assignments and provided materials for a sampling of these courses below.

What You Need to Know

Social work entails interacting with people in a wide range of settings, including workplaces and schools, but strengthening your understanding of human interactions can help you in almost any career. You can increase your knowledge through free, noncredit social work courses offered online by several colleges and universities. These courses generally include a syllabus, recorded lectures and/or lecture notes, and recommended readings, as well as various assignments and quizzes. Certain classes include a percentage of class participation through exercises, but you can still learn a great deal about these courses through materials provided.

University of Notre Dame

The University of Notre Dame’s offers a course in Introduction to Social Psychology and another in Understanding Societies through its OpenCourseWare (OCW) system. Classes were formally offered as for-credit course taught to students on campus. You can download course materials for free and study at your convenience, but you will not receive credit for these courses.

Introduction to Social Psychology

This intro course was taught by Professor Jessica Collett to students on campus twice a week. The course includes links to webpage lecture notes and reading material.

What Will I Learn?

The course covers society’s role in shaping personalities and the psychology of social structures and interactions. You will also learn how individuals influence groups and social structures.

What Assignments Will I Complete?

You will have the option to answer questions included in lecture notes on topics such as social psychology, the social construction of self, childhood and social groups. However, you aren’t required to complete assignments because instructors will not review your work.

What Materials Are Provided?

The course includes lecture notes, textbook abstracts and websites to professional journals. You can read the biography of the professor and the course syllabus. You may also access links to study materials on topics such as stereotypes and analyzing conversations.

Understanding Societies

This free course was first made available in Spring 2009 class, and taught twice a week to undergraduate students for course credit. You will not receive academic credit for this course, but you can access its content for free and study at your own pace.

What Will I Learn?

You will learn theories that sociologists use to understand society, social relationships and behavior. The course also examines the role of sociology in other fields and how sociologists conduct their work.

What Assignments Will I Complete?

To follow the outline of the course, you could complete the three exams and 25 quizzes provided, all of which include multiple-choice, true-false and short-answer questions. The quizzes include answers but the exams don’t.

What Materials Are Provided?

This free, online sociology course includes notes for each of its 29 lectures on topics, such as social class, culture and research methods. The public also has access to the course syllabus and a list of readings that include links to textbooks and other online resources.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

MIT has an Urban Sociology in Theory and Practice course that was originally taught in the Spring of 2009 to graduate students on campus. You will not receive credit for the course or interact with the instructor, but you can view lecture topics and assignments for free.

What Will I Learn?

This free graduate course is divided into 12 lectures and explores subjects in urban sociology, such as political power, the nature of community, technological change and social inequality. You will also study the relationship between social behavior and buildings and structures.

What Assignments Will I Complete?

Though not graded or submitted to an instructor, you could write six short papers with each one examining the topics in a week’s worth of reading assignments. You could also prepare a 10-minute summary of one week of readings and write a final paper or research proposal that makes new contributions to the understanding of urban social life.

What Materials Are Provided?

The course provides a list of required and recommended textbooks, that are optional for free online learners, and a syllabus. You may purchase course textbooks through links provided on the course website.
