SUPER FEEDBACK!

✔︎  Student work from Groovy Grunge!

“Wow, wow, wow!! These exercises are absolutely magical!!”  Sooz

“I am a BIG fan of Tammy’s Novel Approach and Groovy Grunge classes! Well worth the investment as I have used many of the techniques I learned in art pieces I created afterwards. I find I often go back and repeat specific exercises that I really love. But it doesn’t stop there! I get so inspired by what my new class “mates” come up with – so many creative takes on Tammy’s original ideas. I recently took another online class by another instructor and was constantly comparing them to Tammy – she wins hands down for well planned, structured and awesomely delivered classes.” Julie

“I’ve loved this course, thank you so much.” Rebecca

“Tammy’s workshops are pure delight – she is very thorough in her approach and always leads you down wonderful and imaginative paths. I highly recommend them!” Patricia

Blend, collage & play with acrylics in an open-ended, loose, playful, grungy style. Create a variety of art journal pages which incorporate paint blending and layered collage in a visually engaging style. We’ll jump in, play with grids, rainbows and incorporate those papers and ephemera you’ve been collecting for years!

GRIDS AnD COLLAGE GALORE

We will start by selecting + prepping a hardback book to use as an art journal and then I’ll show you how to create more than 10 unique art journal pages! You’ll get a chance to roll up your sleeves, and immerse yourself in your art journal!!! We will work with concepts like grids, paint blending, adding depth and grunge to your pages, and more.

About NOVEL APPROACH

Working with collage and acrylics in an altered book is an incredibly engaging process; each page of your book has a built-in starting point that you can choose to incorporate or ignore. I like to have multiple books and journals going simultaneously.

When your book is finished you’ll adore the glorious edges of saturated acrylic paint. Join this class to explore ideas for allowing your pages to flourish without a predefined finished product.

You’ll learn an array of acrylic painting and collage techniques. We’ll go on an idea & inspiration treasure hunt, paint abstract backgrounds, discover found poetry, work with grids and freestyle collage, adding color and mystery to your book.

To get started, I’ll share tips for selecting a book for your project and show you how to prepare it for all of those layers of paint!

“I find Tammy Garcia’s online workshops to be very organized and so inspiring. Full of the details I need, but with the freedom and permission to be me. Tammy inspires me to try so many things I would not try on my own and she attracts a lot of fun & creative people to her workshops. It is a joy to participate!” Lenna

Super feedback!

✔︎  Student work from Tiny Museum

“I LOVE the art I’ve made for Tiny Museum. I’ve bought more watercolor journals because it’s such a lovely medium and I just want to keep doing more! I love how Tammy puts her workshops together – everything is very clear and easy to follow and she provides great feedback. The video tutorials are wonderful – they’re beautifully produced and an absolute joy to watch.” Rebecca

“That lady could motivate a snail to stand up and do the tango! Watercolor and gouache are certainly dancing together in my journal as I work through the many videos in this class. I’m sure everyone has their own approach but I enjoy working while listening to the videos, listening and following along very loosely while Tammy describes what’s she’s doing. Her enthusiasm is contagious and helps cut through the painful haze I am swimming through every day.” Michelle

“A warm-up grid where I focused on exploring the relationship of water & paint, not so much on patterns. For me it was about noticing the tiny interactions between colors, how the paint hits the water. This was incredibly relaxing to do!” Patricia

“Labor Day I had the house to myself heaven and had so much fun playing with the inspiration grids. I could keep going forever. Color and pattern are my happy place.” Carlene

Feedback from Previous Workshops!

“The workshop offers a fantastic chance to really play, and enjoy the messy process, as well as developing new skills and using different materials.” N

“I have loved making pages for each lesson in the workshop, learning something great from each and just plain having fun! I still have more ideas to play with and that’s a great thing about having extended access to the workshop. The time frame and the build up of techniques allows me the room to let it all evolve. I highly recommend your workshops for their laid back ease and generous inspiration.” C

“I love Tammy’s class because it’s focusing on the creativity process rather than how to create a specific product. There is good instruction on the techniques she features while being very open-ended. It’s been easy to incorporate these ideas into my work without feeling like I’m copying or recreating hers. The techniques are adaptable to a variety of materials and I find myself combining the things I learned in different lessons.” K

“You have certainly found your calling in teaching these classes – please keep it up!” K

Know Before Registering

Workshops are shared with you via video tutorials, examples, and written materials on a private workshop website. All of the material is self-paced with 24/7 access so that you can work whenever it is convenient for you.

Facebook Groups Your workshop may include access to a dedicated FB group [see below ⬇️]. Tammy is active in the FB group and is happy to help you with troubleshooting as you work through the techniques. You can ask questions and get help with art materials too! In the group, you’ll find a community of creative people playing with the techniques and ideas shared in the workshop. It’s a great space to find additional content, examples, ask questions about materials, share the work that you create for the workshop, and see what other folks are doing with the ideas!

What Facebook Groups are open now? Currently I’m offering a dedicated Facebook group for Groovy Grunge + Novel Approach called the Daisy Yellow Altered Books Group. This group is open through December 2018.

Videos are posted via Vimeo and are not downloadable. To access all of the content, you’ll need basic computer skills, a high speed internet connection, the ability to login to a website using a userid/password and navigate a website. It’s easy to navigate!

Workshop fees are for one participant and cannot be shared or transferred. My supportive workshop Facebook groups are open to women only, 18+, individual [non-shared] accounts. I’m happy to help you with password issues but cannot provide technical support. Workshop fees are non-refundable.

About expiration dates. Each year, I re-evaluate the content of each workshop, the video quality, and the workshop as a whole… and if the workshop is still of good quality, up-to-date, relevant, I extend the end point. Typically I do this for YEARS. That said, I do not offer forever access because technology changes, website hosting services change terms, hard drives & back-up hard drives crash and video technology improves.

Further, my ability to support the workshops can change and I want to provide the best possible experience for each of you.

Expiration dates for all of my workshops.
12/31/20: Tiny Museum, Novel Approach, Groovy Grunge
12/31/18: The Circle

Each year San Diego Book Arts sponsors hands-on workshops led by internationally recognized book arts specialists. Most classes are accompanied by an evening artist’s lecture that is free to the public. Workshops cover such topics as historic and innovative bindings, paper making, surface decoration, mixed media, and developing ideas and book content. In addition to a wide variety of papers and paper-based media, students have the opportunity to work with leather, wood, plant fibers, mica, Dremel tools, and even sewing machines.

Book Arts Basics

Book Arts Basics workshops were created in 2016 to provide introductory bookmaking instruction and give members an opportunity to teach and share their skills. The 3-hour classes are reasonably priced and all result in at least one completed book and a handout to take home. For those new to the world of artists’ books the Book Arts Basics series offers SDBA members and the community at large a way to explore different book forms and related arts such as paper decoration, stamping, and collage.

NEW!  Beyond the Basics

Occasionally one of our San Diego Book Arts members may offer a workshop presenting a more advanced project that needs more instructional time. These classes provide an opportunity for participants to expand their skills in a small-group setting with plenty of hands-on guidance. These Beyond the Basics classes follow the one-day, affordable format of Book Arts Basics workshops.

Refund Policy
A student withdrawing from a workshop seven days or more prior to the class date will receive a refund, minus a $10 processing fee. If a student cancels less than seven days prior to the workshop, no refund will be provided.
