    New KDHE amended regulations

    The KCCTO-KITS ITSN program has approximately 80 mini-grant opportunities available for family child care programs and child care centers across the state of Kansas.  This grant will provide training, technical assistance, and specific materials to enhance the quality of child care provided to children and families.  Preference will be given to programs that serve infants and toddlers, or will commit to opening slots for infants and toddlers. Programs can apply for a mini-grant in one of the following content areas, which will include specific training and materials (see additional information for list of materials associated with each mini-grant area):

    Language & Literacy, Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math (STEM), Motor Development, Diversity, or Creative Expression

    FREE Carbon Monoxide Training and Detector
    The Kansas Department of Health and Environment through the Kansas Environmental Public Health Tracking program in collaboration with the Child Care Licensing program would like to offer an environmental safety training through the learning management system KS-TRAIN. The online course is titled Carbon Monoxide Awareness and participants are eligible to receive one clock hour of continuing education credit at no cost that meets the core competency for health, safety, and nutrition. Successful completion of the course enables the participant to receive a free carbon monoxide detector.

    Kansas Child Care Training Opportunities (KCCTO) and Kansas Inservice Training System (KITS) are excited to invite new and experienced early childhood professionals to join us for information on KCCTO, KITS and the newly funded Infant Toddler Specialist Network. This also provides an opportunity for providers to connect, ask questions, get information and resources from local and state agencies. Those agencies invited are DCF, KDHE, Oral Health, Kansas Breastfeeding Coalition, and Child Start.

    Child Care Aware Classes

    New Required Trainings

    Here is the exemption details for licensed child care providers centers or homes whose license was issued or who were employed by licensed facility before September 1, 2016  who have already completed:
    (A). Signs of Child Abuse and Neglect including abusive head trauma, plus reporting suspected child abuse or neglect
    (B) Basic child development including supervision regulation
    (C) Safe sleep and sudden Infant death syndrome
    If you have received certification of these safe and health topics before September 1st, 2016 you are not required to take the following new required KDHE classes:
    (D) prevention and control of infectious diseases, including immunizations;
    (E) prevention of and response to emergencies due to food and allergic reactions;
    (F) building and premises safety, including identification of and protection from hazards that could cause bodily harm, including electrical hazards, bodies of water, and vehicular traffic;
    (G) emergency preparedness and response planning for emergencies resulting from a natural disaster or human-caused event, including violence at a facility;
    (H) handling and storage of hazardous materials in the appropriate disposal of Bio contaminates, including blood and other bodily fluids or waste;
    (I) precautions when transporting children.

    Follow the next link to the online course through KCCTO for the required new KDHE trainings. The name of the complete set of classes is entitled:
    “Foundations for Safe and Healthy Early Care Facilities Module 2”
    Complete new classes are $5.00 total if enrolled under this title.

    Earthquakes and Child Care Providers

    Child Care Licensing

    This is a reminder of the upcoming optional informational meetings hosted by the Child Care Licensing (CCL) Program.

    The meetings are an opportunity to learn about the new health and safety requirements that are part of the reauthorization of the Federal Child Care Development Fund (CCDF) and the potential impact on new and existing regulated child care facilities. During the meetings we will discuss:

    · CCDF reauthorization

    · Key health and safety standards

    · Identified necessary changes to regulations

    · The process for adopting regulations

    · Opportunities for formal public feedback and comment

    Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions and to learn about the process for adopting regulations and the opportunities for interested parties to provide formal comment and feedback on proposed changes.
