    Hero Definition Essay

“When you come to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on.” (Franklin D.) Heroes are those who will not back away just because they are scared. Heroes are those who will face their worst fear to save or influence someone. Heroism is when people are a great inspiration, or when someone is selflessness, or someone that won’t give up.
Heroes are those who inspire people to do great things. Heroes inspire people by doing something that stands out. Inspiring someone is not simply going along with the crowd, if not doing something extraordinary or supernatural. Someone that was a great inspiration was Ana. Her son Adam even said,” She is an inspiration to us all, for she is a real hero.” She was a great inspiration because she had cancer yet she chose to live the last of her life having a positive attitude and having fun with her family. Another great inspiration is my mom. She was a single mother, raising me and my two little brothers, all by herself. She would take us to school, then she would go work to get money for the things that we need, she’d pick us up from school, and then after all of that, she would feed us. She would do all of that work on her own, yet she still took care of us better than any great mother would. That’s why my mom is a great inspiration to me. One other inspiration is my aunt Edilu. She is always busy and she has so many things to do, but she gets everything done really well. She’s also a pastor with three kids and she still manages to give them everything that they need.
Another great characteristic of heroes is that they put everyone before them. A hero must be willing to risk their life for someone. Mulan sacrificed herself for the people in the army even though they didn’t like her when they found out that she was a woman. Odysseus also decided to put his men before himself. He didn’t choose any of his men to help them, instead he let them choose who will help. He also made sure that the Cyclops did not know that there were other men in the ships by telling the Cyclops that their ship was wrecked and the rest of his men died. Pinocchio was also selfless. He did so many wrong things, but when he found out that his “dad” was inside the biggest whale in the sea, he went looking for him and died saving his “father”. Pinocchio was a hero and that’s why the fairy made him a real boy.
Heroes have many other different characteristics, but the one that I think is the most important is never giving up no matter what. Never giving up is what makes a hero out of an ordinary person. Any ordinary person can be hero just like Peter J. Ganci, Jr. He died rescuing people on September 11, 2001. He didn’t give up when the twin towers were collapsing. Instead, he kept going into to rescue people and then the tower collapsed while he was in the building. After a terrifying moment, he ended up coming out of the collapsed building. If he would’ve given up, he wouldn’t have been able to come out and save more people. In the passage it says, “Here, his son Christopher Ganci, 25, tells Scope about his father-his hero- and the many people he saved that day.” Another amazing, yet ordinary hero is Vanessa Soto. She was an Elementary School teacher that was 27 years old. One day, she was teaching her students and they hear a gun shot. She was afraid, yet brave. She didn’t know what to do, but she didn’t give up. She decided to hide her students in a cabinet and to tell the murderer that the students were in the gym. Sadly, she was killed, but the students were safe. Karen Saavedra

Vanessa was a hero because she sacrificed herself and sadly ended up shot. Pinocchio was also selfless. In the passage it says, “Here, his son Christopher Ganci, 25, tells Scope about his father-his hero- and the many people he saved that day.” Odysseus was someone that didn’t give up on escaping from the Cyclops. He was trapped along with his men that were thinking that they were going to die, but even with so many negative thoughts, he didn’t give up. He came up with a few plans like: killing the Cyclops, poking the Cyclops’ eye out, and holding on to the sheep. He finally decided to poke the Cyclops’ eye out and hang on to the bottom of the sheep and managed to escape. Someone else that does not give up so easily is Nancy, my friend that I consider my sister. She is a very happy person, but when she sees that someone is sad or not having a good day, she will be determined to cheer that person up. She will not give up until that person smiles. She doesn’t even care if she gets in trouble or hurt by trying to cheer someone up.
Anyone can be a hero, but not without being an inspiration, selfless, or determined. This is what I believe can make a hero out of anyone. Sometimes we just need to change to be a good person or a hero, but just being willing to change or to try to change is already the first step.
